Bacterial & microbial contamination
Microbes in drinking water once killed Americans by the thousands. Modern treatment all but ended that, and the story of bacterial contamination today is really the story of how much changed, and where the risk has moved.
The disease that treatment defeated
For most of human history, drinking water was a leading way to die. Cholera, typhoid, and dysentery moved through cities in the water supply, killing tens of thousands.
That changed in 1908, when Jersey City, New Jersey became the first U.S. city to routinely chlorinate its water. Within a few decades, chlorination and filtration had cut cholera by roughly 90% and typhoid by about 80%, and effectively eliminated them as waterborne threats. It remains one of the great public-health achievements of the 20th century.
Where the risk lives now
The 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act set enforceable national standards, and today utilities continuously test for indicator bacteria such as total coliform and E. coli. A positive sample, or a pressure loss that could let microbes in, is what prompts a precautionary advisory.
But the nature of the threat has shifted. The pathogen behind most U.S. drinking-water outbreaks today is Legionella, which grows not at the treatment plant but in the warm, stagnant water inside building plumbing, water heaters, and cooling towers.
A moving target
Reports of Legionnaires’ disease have risen sharply since 2000, a trend researchers link to aging building plumbing, a growing older population, and warmer water. Microbial safety is not “solved”; it has simply moved from the reservoir to the pipes closest to us.
Climate change adds pressure from both directions: warmer source water encourages growth, while heavier storms overwhelm treatment and flush contamination into the system.
What you can do
- If a building has sat vacant or water has gone unused, flush the taps before drinking to clear stagnant water.
- Maintain your water heater; Legionella thrives in lukewarm tanks.
- Treat a boil advisory as the precaution it is: boiling reliably kills these organisms.
